BANGOR - Wanted: University of Maine alumni who have moved out of state. Aiming to attract graduates back to Maine to start or expand businesses, three area organizations have created a number of new strategies to make people aware of the job opportunities that now exist in the state.

Aroostook County Police Seek Clues in Missing Woman Case

ALLAGASH - Maine State Police were checking out many possibilities Thursday in their continuing investigation of a suspicious 911 call made by a woman from a private residence Tuesday night. The call launched a search for a female who told emergency personnel that she feared for her life during a 911 call before the line went dead.

Bangor, State Fear Bush Budget Plan

BANGOR - Proposed federal budget cuts could mean the loss of as much as $1.2 million a year in grants used by the city for downtown revival, to fix dilapidated homes and improve infrastructure, officials said this week. Statewide, the losses could amount to more than $20 million.

Downtown Bangor Group Unveils New Events

BANGOR - An early evening street dance in May, an artisan's market during the annual summer concert series in June and July, and downtown landscape enhancements are among the attractions coming soon as part of the Bangor Center Action Plan. The action plan, unveiled Thursday during a meeting at City Hall, is the product of the "Downtown Bangor After Dark" meetings series.

Town Needs New Firetruck Howland Looks to Pump Up Safety

HOWLAND - Town officials are considering a plan to buy a new firetruck and put an older Howland Volunteer Fire Department truck in Enfield, lowering insurance rates and increasing fire safety, Fire Chief Philip Dawson said Thursday. The town has about $170,000 to buy a new truck and needs to replace its present frontline pumper, which is 37 years old and beginning to wear out, Dawson and Board of Selectmen Chairman Frank Kirsch said.

Wanted Man Arrested After Breaking Hotel Window

A Wednesday night fight at the Main Street Inn in Bangor resulted in one broken window and a wanted Lewiston man taken into custody. Bangor police were called to the motel at about 11:35 p.m. for a report of a fight and Officer Edward A. Mercier arrived to find a window broken at Room 13 and a van driving off. Other officers stopped the vehicle down the street, across from Miller's Restaurant. The van's driver, Kenneth R. Hardy, 24, admitted to drinking earlier.

Roads Frustrate Greenville Area Drivers

GREENVILLE - Teacher Jan Corrigan has had to rely on more substitutes this winter than ever before - not because of illness but because of the poor traveling conditions of Route 15/6 in the Moosehead Lake region. Corrigan, who travels 62 miles from Greenville to her teaching position in Newport, is not alone in voicing her frustrations this winter about the road maintenance.

Pittsfield Mill Pond Project On Target

PITTSFIELD - Although it was a small group of four that gathered Thursday night to refine the design plan of the Mill Pond Park project, it was a group with optimism. The Mill Pond Task Force has until June 1 to complete the renovation of a former trailer park into a public garden complete with walkways, a drinking fountain, parking lot and picnic tables and benches.

Snowmobile Ignites Corinna Garage

CORINNA - Frances Thompson of Paradise Avenue answered his doorbell Thursday afternoon to find his garage on fire. Thompson had gone into the garage, which is attached to his home, a few minutes earlier and started his snowmobile, according to Fire Chief Alan Clark. Thompson shut the machine off and went back into the house.

Woman Ordered to Leave Her Home

ELLSWORTH - An Otis woman living in a small dwelling with no bathroom is contesting the town's order that she move away from her Point Road property until a septic system can be installed there. In documents filed in Hancock County District Court, the town claims Ellen Tice is violating the town's land use ordinances by living at 261 Point Road in a storage shed that has no septic system.

Man Makes Bail, Finds His Home Burglarized

BAR HARBOR - A local man may have been the victim of bad karma when, shortly after being arrested, he returned home to discover that someone had broken into his apartment. After an employee at the Big Apple convenience store on Cottage Street reported Tuesday that someone had stolen items from his jacket while he was at work, police replayed a security camera videotape that had recorded who had entered the store during the employee's shift, Sgt. Mother Sues Daughter's Fiance

BANGOR - Four days after she appeared in court to support the man who admitted he was responsible for her daughter's death, Debra Burpee of Dixmont filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him. Nicholas Wark, 23, of Plymouth pleaded guilty on Valentine's Day in Penobscot County Superior Court to manslaughter in the death last summer of his fiancee, Jessica Gibbons, 20, of Plymouth.

People Lining Up to Adopt Seized Dogs Kennebec Valley Humane Society Gets Hundreds of Calls About Kennel Refugees

AUGUSTA - Roxanne Brann's phone is ringing off the hook. The executive director of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society said Thursday that hundreds of people have contacted her this week after hearing about the seizure of 72 dogs from a Hudson kennel.

Woman Enters Plea in Embezzlement Case

An Exeter woman appeared in two different courtrooms Thursday to plead innocent to accusations that she took more than $300,000 from her former employer. Cecelia G. White, 40, appeared in the afternoon in Hancock County Superior Court in Ellsworth, where she pleaded innocent to a theft charge.

Brooksville Pupils Raising Funds for Alaska Trip

Their bags are packed and they're ready to go, but they still have some more fund-raising to do before flying off on their grand adventure. Fourteen Brooksville Elementary School pupils, trip leader Nada Lepper and their chaperones fly out of Bangor International Airport at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, March 3, for their "North to Alaska: Iditarod 2005 Education on the Trail" trip of a lifetime.

Union Woman Charged with Attempted Murder

ROCKLAND - A Union woman has been charged with attempted murder after she reported striking her 7-year-old daughter with a cast- iron frying pan. Natalie Hall, 34, of Happy Hollow Road called the law enforcement dispatch center at 11:33 a.m. Sunday to report the incident.
