CALAIS - What appeared to be an injured moose that may have entered the state "illegally" from Canada and last was seen running through Calais Thursday afternoon may have survived its swim back across the swollen St. Croix River. Rain pelted the area Thursday. It was not a great day for a swim.

Independent Film Begins Shooting On Vinalhaven

VINALHAVEN - Producers of an independent film called "Sternman" wanted an authentic Maine setting for their project. They're getting it this week on Vinalhaven, a Penobscot Bay island off Rockland.

Sad 1 Voters Ok $18.8m Budget

PRESQUE ISLE - Despite one voice of dissent, about 50 SAD 1 voters approved the district's $18,824,404 budget for the 2005-2006 school year during Wednesday night's district budget meeting. The budget represents a $532,175 or 2.9 percent increase from last year, though school officials have called it a "status quo, hold the line budget" because the local mills raised for education will remain at 12.9 mills.

Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High Gets Face-Lift

BANGOR - Peakes Auditorium has received a face-lift for the first time in its 40-year history. Thanks to a $290,000 renovation project completed in January, the 891-seat auditorium at Bangor High School boasts new chairs and flooring, a state-of-the-art lighting system and freshly painted acoustic and ceiling panels.

Houlton Man Suffers Head Injuries in Crash

HOULTON - A Houlton man suffered head injuries after he was knocked off his motorcycle in a Wednesday collision with a car, according to an official with the Houlton Police Department. Allen Lefay, 57, of Houlton was taken by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Police and hospital officials said Thursday that he has been discharged.

Author to Discuss His Red Sox Book

ELLSWORTH - Ty Waterman, author of "The Year the Red Sox Won the Series," will be at the Ellsworth Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Waterman will speak about his book, which is an account of the 1918 World Series when the Red Sox claimed a six-game victory over the Chicago Cubs. Waterman recounts the exploits of members of the 1918 team, including the Babe Ruth, and World War I's impact on the 1918 baseball season.

Chamber Seeks Art for 2006 Guide Book

BELFAST - The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting photo or other image submissions for its annual contest to appear on the front page of the 2006 Guide Book. The book is an important tool for marketing the Belfast area to a wide audience throughout Maine, New England and the country.

Climate Change Talk Planned in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH - An economics and public policy professor at the University of Maine at Machias will talk about climate change policy at the Ellsworth Public Library. Jon Reisman will speak at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, in a free program open to the public.

Compost Workshop Set for Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH - The Woodland Museum will host a backyard composting workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11. The workshop will cover simple procedures that participants can use to transform yard, garden and kitchen wastes into a compost pile that will be used in the Ellsworth community garden.

Unity Fair Artwork Contest Announced

UNITY - The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association is conducting an artwork contest for the 2006 Common Ground Country Fair. The selected artwork will be featured on the 2006 fair poster, T- shirts and other fair merchandise, and promotional literature. Newspaper articles and press releases will focus on the artist and the artwork. The winning artist will receive $1,000.

The Green Coast Coalition to Meet

PERRY - A new coalition called The Green Coast: A 3-Nation Initiative for Sustainable Economic and Energy Development, will have its formative meeting Saturday, May 28, at the Crohn Conference Center on Southmeadow Road, Perry. The meeting, open to the public, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The coalition will work toward new, creative, realistic action.

Dexter Pair Ordered to Repay $4m

BANGOR - A Dexter couple has been ordered to repay the more than $4 million they bilked from 130 investors in what the Maine Attorney General's Office called a Ponzi scheme. William and Barbara Gourley operated a real estate development firm for 11 years that violated state security laws by illegally selling nearly $4.4 million worth of promissory notes, according to court documents.

Officer Cleared in Dog Death Investigators: Action Justified

BELFAST - An internal investigation into the shooting of a dog by a city police officer concluded that the officer acted properly. Police Chief Jeff Trafton said Thursday that Officer Brian Lunt went to a home on Route 137 on May 18 to assist with an ambulance call. The resident had called 911 to report that she was suffering what she thought was a heart attack.

Dixmont Democrat First to Issue Snowe Challenge

Democrat Jean Hay Bright this week became the first in her party to officially launch a campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe. The Dixmont political activist said her decision to seek the seat in 2006 came after a tour of the state in which she found voters dissatisfied with the political makeup in Washington.
