Hispanic Leader Hones Role in State
Maria Eugenia Rave of Bangor should be on familiar ground when she heads to Washington, D.C., today as a Maine representative to the Senate Hispanic Leadership Summit. The summit, led by U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, is an opportunity for nearly 400 Hispanic leaders from cities and towns around the country to share ideas and concerns with government officials and legislators about the issues that most affect the fastest-growing segment of the population.

One Episcopal priest is leaving his native state, while another has returned to hers amid a controversy over homosexuality that has divided the Anglican Communion for more than two years. The Rev. Kevin Holsapple bid farewell on Sunday to his flock at St. John's Episcopal Church in Bangor. Next month, the Dexter native will begin his tenure as rector of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Crystal River, Fla., on the Gulf Coast about 85 miles north of St. Petersburg, Fla.

CARMEL - The company that is developing the town's revaluation is asking for an extension, but with so much depending on the assessment, town officials want it sooner rather than later. "I think we should maybe put our foot down and ask them to honor their time" frame, Selectman John Luce said at Monday's selectmen's meeting.
Orrington Fire and Rescue Ready to Start
ORRINGTON - The new crew has been hired, the billing is in order and even though not all the radios have been collected, the Orrington Fire and Rescue Department is expected to start operating Saturday or by Monday at the latest. "I'll end up with [a crew of] somewhere between 16 and 18 if everybody comes on," Chief Mike Spencer told the board Monday. "Three came from the [former] ambulance barn and were added to the fire department [figures] and I picked up six new ones."
Flap Over Magic Claims City Councilor
MILLINOCKET - Saying that she was tired of the endless name- calling over MAGIC, Councilor Gail Fanjoy said Monday she will not seek re-election, while a man unintentionally at the center of much of the controversy has said he will run for office. "If my leaving the scene can bring some quiet to the community, I am more than happy to bow out," Fanjoy said Monday. "I think that I was electable. It would have been my fourth term on the council.
Dover-Foxcroft Manager Rehired
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Jack Clukey will stay on as Dover-Foxcroft's town manager. Selectmen on Monday conducted an executive session to review Clukey's performance, and during a public session later voted unanimously to appoint him as town manager to the end of the 2006 fiscal year.

OLD TOWN - After a workshop Monday to discuss the overpopulation of white-tailed deer that has been plaguing residents of the Marsh Island area for years, the council has agreed on a draft resolve to implement a regulated hunt to thin the herd. Deputy Arrests Medway Man Who Admitted Camp Burglary
A Medway man was arrested Saturday after he admitted that he burglarized a camp in Grindstone earlier this month. Leslie A. Mushero, 27, was tracked by Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Knights, who received information from another man that Mushero may have sold him stolen property.
Medway Biomass Boiler Project On Tap Again
MEDWAY - After being stalled for almost a year, a plan to create what could be the state's first industrial park totally powered by environment-friendly biomass boilers, creating as many as 80 jobs, seems to be moving forward, town officials said Monday. Dick Day, owner of Day's Lumber Co., is poised to buy 276 acres from the town for $40,000 to create the business park and wood mill he plans to run on it, Kathy Lee, the town's administrative assistant, said.
Street Dance to Help Buy Band Uniforms for School
BREWER - A mix of live and recorded music designed to attract all ages is planned for a family street dance 7-10 p.m. Saturday at Brewer Auditorium, and all of the money raised with go toward purchasing new high school band uniforms. BANGOR - Support for a proposed citywide ban in city buildings on magazines, brochures, newspapers and other publications not connected to departmental operations quickly eroded Monday during a City Council meeting. Bangor Council Tables Taxi Fare Increase
BANGOR - After getting an earful from city taxicab drivers, city councilors agreed Monday to table a proposed increase in the maximum amounts that cabdrivers can charge their fares. Councilors will consider a fuel surcharge during the next meeting of their finance committee at 5 p.m. Monday. The surcharge proposal could go before the council for a vote as early as the council's next regular meeting, set for Oct. 10.
Mayor of Pittsfield Will Not Run Again
PITTSFIELD - Mayor Peter "Andi" Vigue, 35, will be stepping down as a Pittsfield councilor at the end of this year, after six years of public service. Although Vigue did not make his plans public during recent council meetings, he did not return nomination papers by the Friday, Sept. 25, deadline.
