State Panel to Seek Housing for Katrina Victims
AUGUSTA - A state task force will consider ways to offer housing to people left homeless by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, Gov. John Baldacci said Monday. Baldacci announced the task force as he spent the Labor Day holiday at the Maine Emergency Management Agency in Augusta with various state officials.
Parade of Dachshunds Anticipated in Belfast Wienerfest to Draw Hundreds of Dogs, Owners
BELFAST - It will be Wieners on Parade at the annual Belfast Wienerfest, with diminutive dachshunds strutting their stuff from the Boathouse to the Public Landing. The city will go to the dogs Sunday when hundreds of dachshunds and their human handlers are expected. Last year's festival drew about 250 dogs and twice that many humans.
UNITY - There are two camps at Unity College. On a given Friday night, you might find one group wearing flannel shirts and hats, cooking up a stew loaded with freshly killed venison and talking about the hunt.
Unity Professor Reframes Notion of 'Two Camps'
UNITY - John Zavodny, an associate professor in philosophy and humanities at Unity College, added a component to the required freshman Unity Experience course, which capitalizes on differences in student environmental values. In doing so, he rejected the "two camps" notion of a campus of tree-cutters and tree-huggers.
With thousands feared dead in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Maine members of the New England Region's Disaster Mortuary Team have been called to the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast. "A call has been made for approximately 30 team members from the region's Disaster Mortuary Team or DMORT," Bruce Fitzgerald, MEMA task person, said Monday. "They're a FEMA team. They are coroners and [medical examiners] and funeral people."

Dj to Stay On Air 60 Hours to Raise Storm Relief Funds
BREWER - DJ Dan Cashman says he will rely on strong coffee and the trail mix he brought into the studio to keep him awake for the 60 hours he has pledged to stay on the air to raise money for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief. Radio station WBZN-FM 107.3 on Acme Road is hosting the so- called Cashmanathon, which started at noon Monday and is scheduled to run for 21/2 days to help people on the Gulf Coast affected by the monster storm that devastated the area.
Mars Hill Moves Park Project Forward
MARS HILL - Town Councilors hired an independent contractor to seek grants as part of their efforts to create a small park near the town's new fire station. The council, during its August meeting, agreed to hire Carolee Hallett, who also served as administrator on the town's fire station project.

SEARSPORT - Documentary director D'Arcy Marsh set out to tell the story of George Waymouth, the English explorer whose arrival in Penobscot Bay 400 years ago opened the door for British colonization of the region. Along the way, Marsh discovered the story was as much about the Penobscot Nation as it was about the English explorer.
Audio-Video Equipment Taken From Nokomis
NEWPORT - Burglars entered Nokomis Regional High School on Sunday night and stole nearly $30,000 in recording and video equipment from the school's television broadcasting department. Police Chief Len MacDaid would not release details of the burglary Monday, but said that a comprehensive investigation has been launched and a reward is being offered. He would not say whether the investigation is centered on current or former students.
Bereaved Have Choice Words for Cemetery Thieves
WINTERPORT - Theft of flowers and eternal lights from plots in Oak Hill Cemetery has angered the sexton and left the widow of one man whose grave was robbed cursing the thieves to eternal fires. "Some people are pretty low," said sexton and Selectman Sam Butler. "This should not be happening. It makes me angry that they are getting away with this."
Fort Knox Group Wants Leader Back
PROSPECT - Some members of the Friends of Fort Knox, angered by the ouster last month of executive director Leon Seymour, are seeking his reinstatement, calling for an early annual meeting and board elections. They will press their case at the board meeting tonight, according to member Michael Celli of Brewer, who is spearheading the effort.
Church Craft Group to Sell Quilt On Ebay
ELLSWORTH - A church group plans to auction a special quilt made from 300 men's neckties and signed by famous Mainers, including authors Stephen and Tabitha King, racecar driver Ricky Craven and fishing boat captain and author Linda Greenlaw. Proceeds from the sale will be used to make the 159-year-old First Congregational Church accessible to people in wheelchairs.
Bossy Beano Tops Slate of Garland Days Events
GARLAND - All eyes in Garland next weekend will be on an ox whose "deposit" will make one person a little richer. Visitors who attend Garland Days from Sept. 9 through 11 will have a variety of activities in which to participate, including so- called bossy beano. Organizers of the annual event have learned that cows have a tendency to make their deposits as soon as they are released, which quickly ends the game; whereas oxen like to wander a bit first.
Speed, Alcohol Cited in Fatal Perham Crash
PERHAM - Speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors in a car crash early Sunday morning that took the life of a Wade man, state police said. Ryan Fox, 34, had been driving west on Carson Road in Perham at about 12:30 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and it left the road and rolled over, according to Sgt. Tom Pelletier of the Maine State Police.
Machinery Accident Kills Dixfield Woman
LISBON - Federal safety officials are investigating the death of a 21-year-old woman who was killed in a machinery accident at The Dingley Press, police said. The accident was reported at about 10 p.m. Friday when Kayla Cox of Dixfield was training on a paper machine at the mail-order catalog publisher, said Lisbon police Detective Bernie McAllister.
Murder-Suicide Probed in Yarmouth
YARMOUTH - Maine State Police are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of a middle-aged couple who were found lying in their driveway Sunday morning. The man and woman were found by a jogger shortly after 7 a.m., said Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Surry Man Dies in Moped Accident
SURRY - A Surry man died Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on Newberry Neck Road. Kenton Griffith, 48, was dead at the scene of the accident, according to police.
