Ballot Issues Can't Reduce Sex Abuse Cases

Wow! I'm not much of a political buff, but anyone must see how impressive it was for Maine's incumbent Senate and House candidates to win back their seats by such impressive margins. Tom Allen, who spent nearly no money on TV ads won 60 percent of the vote. Michael Michaud won with 70 percent and Olympia Snowe won with 74 percent of the vote.

Photography School Faces Foreclosure

PORTLAND - Camden National Bank has filed a foreclosure lawsuit against Maine Photographic Workshops, Rockport College and founder and owner David Lyman despite what he said is the pending sale of the schools. The bank filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland, claiming that Lyman has defaulted on nearly $4 million in outstanding loans.

Ex-Bangor Officer to Be in Court

BANGOR - A former city police officer, who has been the subject of a recent internal investigation, was issued a summons Wednesday night for criminal mischief, Police Chief Don Winslow announced Thursday. Joshua Ouellette is scheduled to appear on Jan. 11 in 3rd District Court in Bangor for allegedly slashing four tires on a car at a Bangor residence on April 18, 2005, while he was on duty.

Landfill Proposal a Concern Down East

MACHIAS - Can Washington County afford a new landfill? That was the question tackled by those attending Thursday night's Land Use Regulation Commission hearing on a proposal to rezone a plot of land to build a construction demolition debris landfill. The hearing was held at the University of Maine at Machias.

BANGOR - For the last 32 years, dentist John Frachella has treated low-income children at the Bangor Children's Dental Clinic on Texas Avenue. Under his skilled hands, thousands of area youngsters have had their teeth cleaned and sealed, drilled and filled, capped and crowned and straightened.

Police Still Investigating Two Cases in Canaan

CANAAN - State police detectives are still investigating the death of Cheryl Murdock, 37, and the disappearance of Shirley Moon Atwood, 35, both of Canaan. Lt. Gary Wright said Tuesday that the investigation remains active, although no new information is being released.

Planners Approve Two Gas Station Projects in Bangor

BANGOR - A pair of gas station projects received the green light this week from the city's planning board. But while an expansion at the Irving Oil Corp. project at 301 Odlin Road won unanimous approval, a project planned by Dead River Petroleum Co.'s Main Street location raised questions because of the relatively small site and concerns that any spilled fuel might make its way into the city's wastewater treatment system.

Veterans Honored in School Ceremony

GUILFORD - A tear may have trickled down a cheek or two Thursday as some 50 young and old veterans were called heroes and repeatedly thanked for their service. The SAD 4 veterans from the Guilford area were honored guests of Piscataquis Community Middle School pupils, who demonstrated their patriotism in songs, poems, on special programs, and in a slide show during a Veterans' Day assembly.

Jail Offers Programs to Aid Youths, Adults

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Just what the LifeJackets program has meant to a local high school student was conveyed by the young man in a moving letter read earlier this week during a meeting of the Piscataquis County commissioners. The student's letter sought to encourage the commissioners to continue funding the program that works with at-risk, middle school- age children.

Police Seek Suspects in Home Invasion Robbery

Bangor police are looking for five people in connection with an armed robbery that happened around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. According to reports, when officers arrived at 17 Carroll St. Wednesday evening, they spoke to three males who said that five people wearing dark clothing and masks forced their way into the residence looking for money. Two of the intruders reportedly had knives, and one had a bat.

Students to Discuss Audubon Expedition

BELFAST - The experiences of students in the Audubon Expedition Institute, who camped and lived from a converted school bus, will be presented at the Belfast Free Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. The six women, who refer to themselves and their shared experience as "Six Chicks in the Sticks," will be on hand to discuss what they faced and what they learned through green-building, sustainable agriculture and keeping track of their ecological footprint.

Woman Charged in Attempt to Acquire Drugs

BELFAST - A Searsport woman was arrested after allegedly attempting to convince a local doctor's office to write her a prescription for pain-killing drugs. Nakoma M. Phillips, 27, of Searsport was charged Tuesday with attempting to acquire drugs by deception and violation of conditions of release. She was booked at the Waldo County Jail, where bail was set at $1,000.
