Boy, 17, Arrested in Rite Aid Robbery

BANGOR - Aided by a witness using a cell phone, police on Monday chased down and arrested a teenager suspected of robbing a drugstore minutes earlier. Police said a 17-year-old boy wearing a blue camouflage hat, jeans and a black and gray jacket walked into the Rite Aid Pharmacy at Third and Union streets.

Police Nab Rapper After He Performs in Orono

BANGOR - A man who eluded police for more than a year after a $32 robbery on a Bangor street was arrested during the weekend outside the Orono nightspot where he had just finished a rap performance. Duane Narvel Brown, 21, remained in the Penobscot County Jail on Monday, unable to make bail.

Epa Files Complaint Against Dixmont Dairy Farm

Federal regulators allege that a large dairy farm in Dixmont has repeatedly violated the Clean Water Act by allowing manure and wastewater to flow into a local stream. Bangor to Host Education Forum Today

BANGOR - Gov. John Baldacci and Education Commissioner Susan Gendron will be in Bangor today to answer questions about the proposed administrative restructuring of the state's kindergarten through grade 12 education system. The Local Schools, Regional Support Initiative calls for reducing the number of school districts in Maine from 152 to 26 by next year in an effort to cut administrative costs and shift resources toward the classroom and academics.

Caribou Woman Accused of Shoplifting at Sears

Employees at the Sears store in the Bangor Mall saw a woman with a baby stroller remove several items from a display, then enter a changing room Saturday afternoon. When the woman left the changing room, she allegedly was concealing items she did not own. Police said she tried to leave the store but was stopped outside by security. St. Albans House Fire Leaves Four Homeless

ST. ALBANS - A house fire that had a good head start left a family of four homeless Saturday afternoon. Fire Chief David Crocker said Lisa King, her daughter, son and her son's girlfriend were all away when fire broke out at their Route 43 home around 4 p.m. Fire units from St. Albans, Hartland, Corinna and Dexter rushed to the scene but were unable to save the structure.

Man, Woman From Stetson Critically Injured in Crash

BANGOR - Two Stetson residents were critically injured in a single-car accident on Ohio Street around 5:30 a.m. Monday. Deputy Police Chief Peter Arno said the accident shut down the road for three hours.

Ripley Man, 41, Summoned in Assault On Ice Fisherman

DEXTER - A Ripley man was summoned to court last week after he allegedly assaulted another man who was ice fishing on Lake Wassookeag. Nicholas Bragg, 23, of Dexter told police on Wednesday that he had been ice fishing when Reggie Melvin, 41, of Ripley assaulted him, according to Dexter Police Chief Art Roy.

Discussion Tonight On Sad 46 School Plan

DEXTER - The Abbott Memorial Library will hold a public discussion tonight on the proposed new kindergarten through grade eight school planned for SAD 46 as well as the governor's proposal to consolidate school districts. Everyone will get a chance to be heard by moderator Dave Pearson of Dexter.

Parkman Man Gets Time Served for Possessing Sawed-Off Gun

BANGOR - A Piscataquis County man was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to 110 days in jail, or time served, for possession of a sawed-off shotgun and possession of a gun with an obliterated serial number. Charles W. Maloon, 47, of Parkman also was sentenced to two years of supervised release.

Pulp Truck Rear-Ends Car in Monson, Injuring Two

MONSON - Two women were injured Monday when the vehicle they were traveling in was struck from behind by a loaded pulp truck on Tenney Hill. Patricia Reeves, 59, of Greenville had stopped at about 2:30 p.m. in the southbound lane on Route 15 preparing to pull into a driveway when a truck driven by James Drinkwater Jr., 31, struck her vehicle, according to Investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Department.

Kenneth Black, 82, 'Mr. Lighthouse,' Dies

ROCKLAND - Retired Coast Guard warrant officer Kenneth Black, known far and wide as "Mr. Lighthouse" and who was almost single- handedly responsible for the creation of the Maine Lighthouse Museum, has died. Black, 82, of Union passed away Sunday surrounded by family members and close friends at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Pledges Being Sought for Ride-in in Newport

NARRAGUAGUS - The Narraguagus Snowmobile Club is accepting pledges for the Pine Tree Camp Ride-in. This year's ride-in will take place Feb. 2 to 3 at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center, North Street, Newport. Pledges may be sent to Narraguagus Snowmobile Club, P.O. Volunteers Sought for Belfast Celtic Event

BELFAST - The children's activity committee is looking for volunteers to help with the Maine Celtic Celebration. A planning meeting of the committee will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Hutchinson Center, Route 3. The celebration will take place July 19-22.
