Restaurant Owner Pleads Guilty to Hiring Illegal Aliens

BANGOR - A stalwart of the Down East Hispanic community pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to visa fraud and conspiring with her husband to hire illegal aliens. Doris Amanda Ayala Escalante, 38, of Harrington admitted that between January 2005 and June 2006 she hired at least 10 illegal aliens to work at a Washington County sea cucumber processing plant and the restaurant she operated with relatives.

Guard to Deactivate Engineer Group

AUGUSTA - The Maine Army National Guard will deactivate an engineering unit on Saturday that spent the first part of this year stationed in Afghanistan. The 240th Engineer Group, which has served the state since 1967 and has ties back to 1880, will retire its colors at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Augusta Armory. The ceremony will be followed by the activation of the 120th Regional Support Group, according to Col. Jerry Dunlap, the officer pegged to command the new unit.

Man Tends Nest of Eagle Scouts

MILLINOCKET - In small but heartfelt and pragmatic ways, the hundreds of hours of planning and labor of Scoutmaster Bruce Rioux's ever-growing nest of Eagle Scouts are making Millinocket a better place to live. His Eagle Scouts have built new park benches for a school yard, painted church walls, created walking and hiking trails at the town recreation complex, and constructed an access ramp for disabled residents, among other projects.

Natural Gas Leak Briefly Closes Main Street

BANGOR - A natural gas leak early Wednesday evening prompted city fire and police officials to temporarily block off a section of Main Street near the Hollywood Slots construction site. According to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bostock, construction workers struck an 8-inch natural gas line while digging on the site.

Maine Women's Policy Center Holds Breakfast of Champions

BANGOR - Approximately 75 people gathered Wednesday morning at the Breakfast of Champions to promote family-friendly public policies as a political priority. The Maine Women's Policy Center hosts the annual Breakfast of Champions series as a forum to learn about trends and issues on the horizon for Maine women.

German Fighter Jets Land at Bangor Airport

BANGOR - Three German Tornado multirole combat fighter jets and an American KC-10 landed at the airport around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The jets were returning from training in the western United States and are expected to leave Bangor the end of this week, said Maj. Debbie Kelly, community relations manager for the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor.

Humorist to Perform in Dover-Foxcroft

DOVER-FOXCROFT- Good, clean humor will be the offering this weekend when North Country humorist Travis Wallace dishes about life in New England, particularly the Moosehead Lake region, at a 7 p.m. performance Saturday, Oct. 13, at The Center Theatre. Bridge Painting Begins in Newport Next Week

NEWPORT - Drivers using County Road may want to allow a few minutes of additional travel time for the next few weeks, according to the Maine Department of Transportation. "We're going to start work next week [the week of October 15] on repainting the Corinna Stream Bridge that carries County Road over Corinna Stream, which flows into Sebasticook Lake," said Barry Prescott of Maine DOT's Region 4 Office in Bangor, where the work is being coordinated. Number of Selectmen Topic of Exeter Meeting

EXETER- Selectmen have scheduled a special town meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Exeter School on a recent petition to increase the number of selectmen. About 50 residents signed a petition asking that the board membership be increased from three to five, according to Town Manager Peter Wintle. There have been three selectmen on the board since 1968, he said Wednesday. There were five board members before that.

Community College Offers Fall Open House

BANGOR - Eastern Maine Community College will host its annual fall open house for prospective students and community members from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 26. Activities originate from the Enrollment Center located in Katahdin Hall. State Board Confirms New School in Brewer

BREWER - School officials met with the State Board of Education on Wednesday and gained unanimous approval for Brewer Community School, a planned pre-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school. The board had a few questions about materials that will be used on the outside of the 156,350-square-foot, two-story building, about energy efficiency and about moving the outdoor running track, but the presentation took no more than 10 minutes, Superintendent Daniel Lee said.

GUILFORD - SAD 4 residents will vote next week on the proposed purchase of a parcel of land and house at the school campus entrance on Blaine Avenue. The Haley property, which consists of a house on four-tenths of an acre, is for sale and directors want to add the property to the campus to improve school safety. The school district's land abuts the property on three sides.
