Hovercraft Put to Use Saving Girl Teen, Warden Rescued After Crossing Thin Ice
ELLSWORTH - A teenage girl who "needed some fresh air" ran across the thin ice of Graham Lake on Monday morning to a small island just offshore. After she was located by a game warden, both were rescued by a crew in a hovercraft. A hovercraft from Brewer was called into service for the incident and towed on a trailer to the scene approximately 20 miles away by rescue workers.
Hammond Street Blaze Sends Woman to Hospital
BANGOR - Fire crews removed an unconscious woman from the scene of a fire Monday afternoon that caused the evacuation of the Hammond Street apartment building where she lived. The blaze apparently started in a clothes dryer in the woman's first-floor apartment and spread to other parts of the building, which is on the corner of West Broadway, Assistant Chief Scott Bostock said from the scene.
CALAIS - Although the Canadians are racing toward the finish line on their new international bridge customs facility, the U.S. project hasn't even made it into the first turn. Construction of a $100 million bridge connecting Calais with St. Stephen, New Brunswick, is expected to be completed by September 2008, with the highway part leading up to the bridge a month later, Carl Dodge, resident inspector for the state Department of Transportation, said Monday.
Quimby, Others Tout Katahdin Land Deal
Millinocket-area representatives joined Gov. John Baldacci and conservationist Roxanne Quimby on Monday to celebrate a land deal that will open 11,500 acres in the Katahdin region to snowmobilers and other recreational users. For the past several years, Quimby has often found herself at odds with sportsmen's groups and Millinocket-area leaders over her decisions to prohibit hunting, mechanized recreation and logging on her North Woods properties.
Man and 14-Year-Old Girl Arrested in Brutal Beating in Brewer
BREWER - A 54-year-old Hampden man apparently was lured into a Wilson Street motel room Saturday night and severely beaten by two or three people, then robbed of his cash, Capt. Jason Moffitt of the Brewer Police Department said Monday. "The injuries are fairly serious and include a possible broken cheekbone and broken ribs," he said, describing the beating as brutal. "No weapons were used."
Bangor Homeowners Find Grenade in Wall
The Bangor bomb unit was dispatched Sunday evening to a Cottage Street home after residents discovered a hand grenade in between a couple of basement wall studs, Sgt. Bob Bishop said Monday. The call for help came in around 7:15 p.m. and two officers from the bomb squad found the grenade. It was determined that the grenade was real but inert, Bishop said. Police seized the grenade. Land Offered to Dover-Foxcroft in Exchange for Cemetery Plot
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Selectmen agreed Monday to proceed with the acquisition of a gift of land to expand Dow Cemetery in East Dover. Ethel and Edward Wilbur have offered to donate less than half an acre to the town for the cemetery's expansion. In exchange, they would like a cemetery lot.
Brewer Awarded $6.5m to Build Safety Complex
WASHINGTON - Brewer has been awarded $6.5 million in loan funding from the USDA's Rural Development program for the construction of a new public safety complex, according to U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. The new 30,000-square-foot complex will be located on Parkway South, allowing for improved police and fire department response. Historic Windjammer Damaged After Lines Cut
ROCKLAND - City detectives are investigating the intentional cutting of lines securing the schooner J&E Riggin to its wharf. Deputy Police Chief Wallace Tower said the incident was reported at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. He said the 76-foot schooner was berthed at the Rockland Harbor Park complex formerly owned by MBNA. Tower said the schooner was cast adrift but that the tide and currents kept it in the general area of the dock. The ship was damaged from pounding against the dock, he said.
Dedham Man Receives 5 Years On Drug Charges
BANGOR - A Dedham man was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to five years in prison on drug charges. Brett Savage, 27, was sentenced to three years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.
Injured Canadian Dies After Crash On Route 9
TOWNSHIP 22 - An 89-year-old Canadian man has died from injuries he suffered in a crash on Route 9 on Friday. According to reports from the Maine State Police, Tibor Jeszenszky died Sunday at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Death in Burning Home Attributed to Suicide
FAIRFIELD - The State Fire Marshal's Office reported Monday that a man whose body was found in a burned house last Friday committed suicide after he set his home on fire. Autopsy results concluded that the man died of a gunshot wound to the head. The state medical examiner's office is waiting for DNA testing results to establish the identity of the man, but fire investigators say they believe the victim is Steven Edwards, 55, who lived in the house.

Union 60 and Sad 12 to Share Superintendent
GREENVILLE - A partnership forged several months ago between SAD 12 (Jackman region) and Union 60 (Greenville region) tightened this week with the announcement the two regions will share a superintendent.
