Armed Robbery Reported in Enfield Circumstances Similar to Old Town Case
ENFIELD - Maine State Police responded to an armed robbery here Monday night, the second in as many days in the area. Police scanner traffic shortly after the 9:30 p.m. robbery indicated police were looking for a 6-foot, 2-inch male wearing a beanie cap, blue sweat shirt and bluejeans who held up the Nutters Cash Market on Bridge St.
Panel to Weigh Bill to Require Cell Phone Recycling
AUGUSTA - A legislative committee today takes up Maine's latest proposal to mandate cellular phone recycling, hoping to make at least a dent in the 65,000 tons of cell phones Americans dispose of per year. The Natural Resources Committee will hold a public hearing on a bill that would require cell phone retailers to accept old phones for reuse, recycling or proper disposal.

Trailer Fire Claims Kenduskeag Woman
KENDUSKEAG - A local woman died after a trailer fire Monday, despite her roommate's attempt to pull her to safety, authorities said. Rescuers performed CPR on Bonnie Freyenhagen, 51, outside the trailer, and she was rushed to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she died.
Brewer Hires Firm to Paint Street Lines
BREWER - A Vermont firm was the lowest bidder for painting street lines in the city and was hired last week by city councilors to do the job this summer. The City Council hired L&D Safety Marking Corp. of Barre, Vt., at its April 10 meeting for the job at a cost of $23,870.
Pittsfield Council to Meet Tonight
PITTSFIELD - Councilors have a light agenda for their 7:30 p.m. meeting today. They will set two public hearings for May 1 dealing with tax- acquired property and a minor amendment to the administrative codes, purchase new water meters, apply $110,892 in surplus funds to lower the tax commitment, and put new highway road signs out to bid.

Recognizing Terrorism Topic of Lincoln Course
LINCOLN - A course designed to help people learn to recognize and prevent terrorist activities will be held 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Northern Penobscot Tech Region III, 35 West Broadway. Participants will learn to recognize and prevent terrorist activities, and discuss issues specific to the business sector. The program is offered through the Department of Homeland Security's risk management division.
Um Awarded $1.5m for Bioproduct Research
ORONO - The University of Maine has received some $1.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund wood bioproduct research. The state will contribute 50 percent in matching funds to the project through the Maine Economic Improvement Fund. The UM Forest Bioproducts Research Initiative is working to develop effective and efficient methods for transforming waste products from paper processing and other wood-based enterprises into fuels, plastics and other materials.
Groundbreaking Slated for Newport Center
NEWPORT - Groundbreaking for the Newport Cultural Center will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5, on Main Street. The center will house the Newport Public Library and the Newport Historical Society Museum. The design, by Plymouth Engineering, includes a meeting room, a children's activity room, and workshop areas.
Fields Pond Center Seeks Volunteers
HOLDEN - The Fields Pond Audubon Center is looking for volunteers to lead nature explorations on weekdays from April to mid-June. Training will be at the center from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25.
Um Names Director of Smith Policy Center
ORONO - The University of Maine has named Glenn Beamer as director of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center. Beamer is a former Robert Wood Johnson Scholar, author and political science professor at Rutgers University. He holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the College of William and Mary and a doctorate in political science from the University of Michigan.
Registrations Accepted for Music Together
BANGOR - Music Together is taking registrations for the spring semester, which begins today. Classes provide a musical environment for babies, preschool children, and their guardians. Weekly sessions are 45 minutes.
7 Bangor Teens Face Charges in Milo Incident
Six Bangor teens were summoned and another was arrested Saturday for alcohol-related violations as they and others were gathering on Park Street in Milo for a party, according to police. A caller reported to Milo police Officer David Henderson on Saturday that a fight might occur as about 30 people were gathering behind Maine Savings Bank, Milo Police Chief Michael Poulin said Monday.

Tabitha King's Mother Recalled Spruce Loved Words, Family
BANGOR - Sarah Jane White Spruce, mother of author Tabitha King, was recalled Monday as a devoted mother, lover of words and dedicated employee. She died Saturday at age 83. She and her husband, Raymond Spruce, had eight children and were married for 63 years.
Usda Offers Funds for Rural Programs
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the availability of almost $128 million in federal loans and grants to help rural communities in Maine and other states meet their health care and education needs. PERRY - A recount of last month's vote on a deal with an Oklahoma- based liquefied natural gas developer has not changed the results.
