When fourth-generation Knox County lobsterman Ryan Post leaves Maine, he finds that his profession is a real conversation starter with people from away. "People look at you a little differently because of the mystique of lobstering," the 36-year-old Rockland native said recently. "They ask you a hundred questions. It is the most iconic industry. In my opinion, Maine's not about the blueberry, the pine tree or the birds. It's lobsters."

Dozens in Orono Area Face Charges

ORONO - More than 50 people were arrested or charged by Orono, Old Town and University of Maine police during the three-day Labor Day weekend, mostly for alcohol-related offenses. Nearly half of the incidents occurred on campus, Robert Dana, UMaine's vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said Monday.

Child Porn Trial Begins Today

BANGOR - A federal judge will decide whether an Islesford man intended to produce child pornography when he captured images of his girlfriend's daughter by using hidden bathroom cameras, including one in a toilet, while the girl was a juvenile. U.S. District Judge John Woodcock will preside over the jury- waived trial of Daniel Poulin, 43, which is scheduled to begin today.

Vessel in Sinking Declared Seaworthy

PORTLAND - Was the wooden fishing vessel Sirius seaworthy when it sank four years ago, 60 miles off the coast of Rockland? Port Clyde fisherman Gary Thorbjornson perished when the boat sank, and his widow and the two surviving crew members - including Thorbjornson's son - sued the owner of the boat for alleged negligence and unseaworthiness.

Orono Police Search for Missing 20-Year-Old

Orono police officers, including a canine unit, and Downeast Emergency Medicine Institute searched along the railroad tracks and in the woods behind Webster Park on Monday for a man they say has been missing for 10 days. Few details about the search were available Monday, except that the man is 20 years old and is not dangerous, except possibly to himself, an officer at the scene said.

Trenton Crash Kills 1, Injures 1

TRENTON - One person died and another was injured as a result of a head-on crash on Route 3 Monday evening. Few details were available as deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff's Department remained on the scene late Monday night. Officials did indicate that both vehicles were from out of state.

Clinical Herbalist to Offer Field Class

BAR HARBOR - Clinical herbalist Chris Marano will offer a field class on the medicinal characteristics of plants from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Whole Health Center. The class will include the scientific observation of what Marano calls the "physical language" of plants - how plants reveal information about their characteristics and medicinal properties through their form, color, taste, aroma and habitat.

Schoodic Scramble Seeks Golfers for Benefit

ELLSWORTH - Golfers are needed for the 12th annual Schoodic Scramble on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20. The two-day charity golf tournament is sponsored by Edith R. Dixon and Alan J. Goldstein and benefits the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic, a division of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. The tournament will be played at the Grindstone Neck Golf Course in Winter Harbor and Blink Bonnie Golf Course in Sorrento.

HANCOCK - Several local men face charges after they were arrested Sunday when the Hancock County Underage Drinking Task Force broke up a party on Old Route 1. Astronaut to Speak in Greenville at Fly-in Committee's Banquet

GREENVILLE - Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, who set the record for the longest space mission of any American astronaut, will be guest speaker at the annual International Seaplane Fly-in banquet this coming weekend. Lopez-Alegria, a veteran of three space shuttle missions and an international space station mission, will speak on his experiences during Saturday night's banquet, according to Darralyn Gauvin, secretary of the fly-in committee.
