In "Penobscot fish passage restoration gets $450,000" (BDN, Sept. 1) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration administrator Conrad C. Lautenbacher states "[W]e will be on our way to restoring self-sustaining populations of ... alewife and other sea-run fish to the Penobscot and beyond."
We could have a nice self-sustaining population of alewives in the St. Croix River if the state of Maine had not prohibited native anadromous alewives from spawning in the St. Croix River. The state did this more than 20 years ago. Maybe after a few more electoral generations Augusta will realize how silly their position is and remedy the situation.See the full content of this document
