The idea had already taken root before a fateful day last September, when the University of Maine's "Bananas T. Bear" mascot was peeled off the artificial turf surface of Morse Field in Orono.

It was all for fun, but a wobbly, embarrassed Bananas had been on the receiving end of a savage mauling administered by Monte, the University of Montana's Grizzly Bear mascot, at last fall's home- opening football game.
