BANGOR - The 385 runners who finished Monday's 25th annual Walter Hunt Memorial Fourth of July 3-kilometer road race certainly appreciated the fact that the humid weather that made running conditions miserable over the past couple weeks had dispersed.

Cassie Hintz of Stillwater and Mike Bunker of Bucksport appreciated it even more.

Bunker, Hintz Defend Titles at Hunt 3k Spaulding, Dzurec Each Take Second-Place Finishes

Both runners, who came into the race as defending champions, defended their crowns in the annual Brewer-to-Bangor classic.

Bunker, a University of Southern Maine standout, fended off a second-half charge from Andy Spaulding of Freeport to win in 8 minutes, 35 seconds. Spaulding finished four seconds back (8:39).

Rounding out the top five were Judson Cake of Bar Harbor (8:46) and Adam Goode (8:57) and Phil LeBreton (9:09), both of Bangor.

Hintz placed 13th overall to easily win the women's title in 9:42. Kate Dzurec of Storrs, Conn., who is originally from Hampden, wound up second in 10:24, followed by Molly Peverada of Hampden (11:12), Katrina Bisheimer of Bucksport (12:01) and Patricia Craig of Holden, a running coach ...
