Summary
Recently the Bangor Daily News and the city of Bangor celebrated the accomplishments of Samuel de Champlain ("Bangor event commemorates French explorer's 1604 landing," BDN, Dec. 30), negating once again, for whatever ethnocentric reason, the significant sacrifices and contributions of the "People" who bear the river's name.
The Penobscot Indian Nation people were here when Champlain arrived and we are a vital and significant entity today. Champlain's remaining survivors on the Island of St. Croix would not have lived but for Native people bringing them food and medicine. In return, Champlain and his men kidnapped and enslaved as many as he could. He introduced a myriad of diseases; smallpox, syphilis, measles and gonorrhea, to name a few. The diseases decimated the Native population and opened their land to exploitation by him and other Europeans.See the full content of this document
