Cianbro Axes Plan to Dump On Coast Dredging Materials to Stay in Brewer

Officials with Cianbro Corp. have withdrawn plans to deposit materials dredged from the Penobscot River into an area off the coast of Rockland in response to local opposition to the dumping.

Pittsfield-based Cianbro is in the middle of a massive redevelopment project to turn the former Eastern Fine Paper Co. site in South Brewer into a manufacturing facility for pre-fabricated buildings. As part of the redevelopment, Cianbro is seeking federal approval to remove up to 33,000 cubic yards of river-bottom materials from the Penobscot in order to provide a berth deep enough for large barges.
