Coast Guard Doubles Effort to Smash River Ice

BANGOR - The frozen waters of the Penobscot River ran freely again Tuesday after the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched two vessels to smash up a winter's worth of ice.

The Coast Guard began using two ice breakers at a time this week to improve efficiency and effectiveness, according to Ensign John Hanley, spokesman for Group Southwest Harbor.
