BREWER - Executives from Maine's three largest health care systems, traditionally in competition with each other for patients and the revenue they generate, announced Thursday that they will collaborate to improve medical services and reduce health care spending across the state.

The top administrators of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, MaineGeneral Health and MaineHealth held news conferences in their respective territories of Brewer, Augusta and Portland to explain their new agreement, formalized in an official "memorandum of understanding" that prevents illegal activities such as price fixing.
