Summary


While Sen. Susan Collins is sometimes criticized for her centrist political persuasion, she frequently demonstrates the ability to muster bipartisan support for important legislation. This was evident at the recent Senate Hurricane Katrina hearings.

Collins described the Federal Emergency Management Agency as "bumbling bureaucracy" and that something must be done to ensure that our federal government is properly equipped to handle the next disaster - whether it be another major hurricane or a terrorist attack. She advocates abolishing FEMA and creating a newly organized agency, the National Preparedness and Response Authority.
