Summary
The admirable op-ed, "What to do after the oil runs out" (BDN, June 10), co-authored by Jim Powell, my former colleague at Brookhaven National Laboratory, points out the crisis that this country and the rest of the world are facing: cheap liquid fuels will soon be a thing of the past. When the global production peak of petroleum is reached, pessimistically within 10 years, prices will skyrocket.
The authors reiterate what many other experts have said: that what's needed is conservation and the development of new technologies. Among these is hydrogen, favored by the present administration, but hydrogen must be made from other fuels, and the only one available in sufficient quantities to replace petroleum is coal, which has very serious environmental problems.See the full content of this document
