Summary
Intentions to file license applications to build 34 nuclear reactors in the U.S. were announced (Barron's, April 30, 2007). In Canada at least two near reactors are contemplated. Each reactor produces about 1,000 megawatts. Some of the new U.S. capacity would be in the Southeast and feed the southern end of the power-hungry East Coast megalopolis. One of the Canadian reactors would feed the northern end of New Brunswick, which estimates 4,000 jobs during construction (probably two to four years) and 500 career positions during operation. The province apparently aspires to be a power hub to supply the increasing American market.
Why not a power hub in Maine, with all those jobs plus taxes on about $1 billion investment and the satisfaction of making a large improvement in the environmental quality and productivity of the nation? For two reactors, we get twice as much.See the full content of this document
