ELLSWORTH - Maine Coast Memorial Hospital lost $1.4 million in the last fiscal year, and hospital officials lay the blame directly at the door of the state Capitol.

Treasurer Adin Tooker acknowledged that the economy had forced people to postpone elective surgeries and that MaineCare patients had increased at an "alarming rate," which affected operations. But he made it clear that the biggest hit the hospital has taken in the past year has involved the state's failure to adequately reimburse the hospital for the MaineCare patients it treats.
