Fight the Lies

Summary

As we approach another anniversary of the war in Iraq we will read again of the costs of war. One important price has been the lost good opinion of the rest of the world. Our nation has been a beacon to those who yearned to shake off the yoke of tyranny. Our example inspired the best of the French Revolution. We came out of World War I with a new international reputation, and after World War II, the U.S. was acknowledged by most of the world as a trustworthy ally.

But the last eight years have seriously damaged our international reputation. We are viewed by many as hypocrites, torturers and liars. A recent analysis of the pronouncements of key figures in the Bush administration resulted in 935 identifiable lies. We quibble over whether holding a person's head under water is torture. We deny the truth about our secret prisons. We block progress on treaties to end the manufacture of land mines. Our president speaks with pride of the fine young men and women he sends off to die or be horribly injured while allowing our Veterans Health Administration to deteriorate to the extent that Walter Reed Hospital is an international scandal and Togus cannot provide adequate treatment for returning Maine veterans.
