Ge Crop Debate

Summary

The story "GE seed target of federal lawsuit" (BDN, Jan. 23) raises an interesting question. As a business owner, is the purity of your product your responsibility or that of your neighbors? For example, if you run a laundry and dry sheets outside, can you sue to stop car traffic past your business because exhaust and dust soil the sheets? This is essentially the legal theory opponents of biotechnology are using to stop the planting of genetically improved crops.

Farming has long accepted small amounts of impurities in farm products as long as they are not harmful. This standard recognizes the reality of conducting your business outside in the open air. Now, organic growers are insisting that no amount of genetically modified material is allowable in their crops, even though they can show no harm.
