The state's largest conservation land trust has purchased Saddleback Island off Stonington in just one of 30 projects completed in 2004, officials said Wednesday.

The 78-acre island at the eastern end of the Deer Island Thorofare had been owned for nearly 50 years by the Blum family. It includes a mile of granite shoreline that will be open to the public, according to Rich Knox, communications director for Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
