Summary


At the Quoddy Bay LLC information session held in Eastport on Feb. 24, LNG consultant Jim Lewis repeatedly stated that liquefied natural gas doesn't explode. I quote FERC's Web site, http:// www.ferc.gov/industries/ gas/indus-act/lng-safety.asp, on this topic, under the heading "Dispelling the explosion myth," qualifying the no-explosion scenario: "LNG vapors (methane) mixed with air are not explosive in an unconfined environment."

Additionally, from the December 2004 report completed by Sandia National Laboratories for the U.S. Department of Energy: "Many recent studies have begun to consider both types of events [accidental and terrorist-caused spills] and assess the safety and hazard issues of a subsequent fire or explosion of the spilled LNG."
