In the past, broad, aurora-hued skies have dominated Michael Lewis' landscapes. But these days, Lewis is focused on something more intimate: the landscape of the mind and the spirit. In his newest body of work, sheltered spaces, secluded glens and winding paths bathed in ethereal light lure viewers into the woods - and beyond.

"The landscape is like an armature, a way to give the viewer access," said Lewis, who teaches painting at the University of Maine. "What's being communicated is much more emotional, much more communicative."
