Low-Income Seniors Eligible for Farmshare

Summary

AUGUSTA - Sign-up for the highly popular Senior FarmShare Program is under way. The program links low-income seniors with farmers who provide a wide array of fresh produce and other farm-grown items throughout the summer. The program pays the farmer at the start of the growing season, thereby providing the farmer with cash when it is most needed.

State officials expect more than 17,000 seniors and 140 farmers to participate in the program this year. The Senior FarmShare program, now in its ninth year, is funded primarily through a U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service grant.
