ELLSWORTH - When Tim King began looking for day care for his aging mother, he assumed he would have a number of providers to choose from in Hancock County. But after some searching, he found he had only one.

"It made me realize there was probably an unmet need. We researched it and found that there was," King said in a recent interview. This led King, the executive director of Washington Hancock Community Agency, to persuade volunteers and staff to take on a major project - Friendship Cottage, an adult day program and caregiver resource center in a renovated home in Blue Hill and the first of its kind in the state. Friendship Cottage is expected to open in June.
