Missing the Point

Summary

In a Bangor Daily News column on Dec. 26, Baltimore school teacher Matthew Buck compared the "Lord of the Rings" movie saga to the "terrorist" threat to the United States. "What can we do against such mindless hatred?" questioned Theobald, King of Rohan, referring to the Orcs, and the writer of the column wondered the same about the suicide bombers who would attack us, our World Trade towers, our forces in Iraq and the civilian population in Israel.

The writer misses the point. "Lord of the Rings" is a fantasy, and the Orcs a different species. Suicide bombers, whether they are Palestinian or Iraqi or Japanese in World War II, are real human beings with souls of identical weight to our own. The differences among suicide bombers and most of us are not genetic, but instead come only from variations in human cultures and the conditions of life.
