MOUNT DESERT ISLAND - Though light long has been seen as a symbol of human progress, there is a growing movement in and around Acadia National Park to limit the prevalence of outdoor light when the sun goes down.

The idea is not to make it more difficult to see, but actually to improve at least one type of visibility, according to people involved in the effort. They say they simply want to make sure they can see the stars at night.

"Acadia is one of the last parks east of the Mississippi that has these beautiful night skies," Stephanie Clement of the advocacy group Friends of Acadia said this week. "Once it's gone, it's very hard to get back."
