Summary
The silent films of the 1920s were never really silent. The age of the silver screen was also the age of the keyboardist: the organist or pianist who performed live music while motion pictures rolled. Sometimes the music was ragtime. Sometimes it was composed scores or improvisations. Large city theaters had orchestras. Smaller locales tended to have pianists.
