Natural Resources Committee Considers Groundwater Plan

Summary

Trillions of gallons of rain, sleet and snow trickle through the rocks and soil of Maine each year, recharging a groundwater resource that is becoming world-famous. But with industries such as one of the world's biggest water-bottling companies, ski mountains that depend on wells for their snowmaking equipment, and an agricultural sector that increasingly is reliant on irrigation, Maine can't afford to become complacent, state geologist Bob Marvinney told legislators Thursday.

Lawmakers on the Natural Resources Committee are considering a bill, supported by Gov. John E. Baldacci, calling for better groundwater planning in Maine. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Land Use Regulation Commission, Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Conservation all have a finger in groundwater management, and the result can be "confusing and redundant," said Tom Brennan, Poland Spring's environmental manager and a supporter of the bill.
