Odeon Leader Strives to Inspire Conductor, Youths to Perform at Strand

Summary

When Maestro Augusto Salazar conducts the Odeon Youth Orchestra, he tells the musicians to watch him "like a hawk." That focus allows him to lead the 20 or so musicians, ages 9 to 18, in stirring renditions of works by Vivaldi, Schumann. Prokofiev and Bartok, all of which are on the program of a free community concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Strand Theatre in Rockland.

Odeon, which was founded in 2000 and merged last year with Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, is made up of musicians from public, private and home schools throughout the state. Soloists and the assistant conductor are chosen from the orchestra's ranks. Salazar has been the conductor from the start.
