Persons of Faith, Speak

Summary

"The Bible tells us so" (Lloyd J. Miller's letter, BDN, March 6- 7) and "Voting with heed to religion assures democracy" (the Rev. Elaine Peresluha's article, BDN, March 6-7) present a clear example of how individuals can look at the same topic but describe it in completely different ways. While one opinion is that people of faith need to be outspoken about their values and that all voices need to be heard in a democracy, the other states that anything other than his interpretation of the Bible is unacceptable.

All people of faith should speak out on issues affecting our lives, our towns, our state and our nation. I am sure Miller speaks from his heart and faith when he states that the only sanctifiable marriage is between one man and one woman. The Bible tells us so. Really? The Bible also tells us that a man may marry more than one woman (Genesis and II Samuel), that a married man may take concubines (II Samuel, I Kings and II Chronicles), that divorce is not permitted (Deuteronomy and Mark), and that if no acceptable men can be found, a woman may have sex with her father in order to have children (Genesis).
