Pickerel Pond Hydrilla to Get Second Application of Herbicide

Summary


State environmental officials have approved a second herbicide application on a southern Maine pond in an attempt to control an invasive plant known as "the perfect weed."

In 2002, Department of Environmental Protection scientists verified that a hydrilla population had been established in Pickerel Pond in Limerick, near the New Hampshire border. Last spring, they attempted to poison the plant with an herbicide called fluridone and had believed the effort to be effective.
