Plan On Warming

Summary

Thank you to Sen. Olympia Snowe for having the courage to write a letter requesting that Exxon Mobil stop their funding of global warming critics. Exxon Mobil makes nearly $177 million each day and has enormous power over public opinion. The existence of global warming is essentially accepted by peer-reviewed scientific literature. Yet, the debate continues in the popular media. Effectively, the public perceives a scientific conflict where none exists. Instead of funding global warming critics, oil companies should embrace conservation education and implement viable alternative energy sources. This debate needs to move beyond the question of whether or not global warming exists and on to what we can do about it.

If you have been reading the Bangor Daily News editorials and letters to the editor recently, global warming may seem a controversial issue. Doug Merrill's op-ed December 4th has drawn several letters supporting the perspective that global warming is a myth. In this media rich age, distinguishing between facts and spin has become so difficult that it is possible for two rational, well- informed people to have completely different perspectives on what is or is not happening. It is sad that media has lost its perspective on its responsibility in shaping public opinion. This is not an issue of free speech. Global warming critics can say anything they want, just as flat earth theorists and young earth theorists have for years maintained views that contrast sharply with science based perspectives.
