A 'Promiscuous' Past

Summary

While they affirm traditional marriage, many Maine voters also support civil unions. We believe partners in civil unions should be able to visit each other in the hospital, protect each other with health and life insurance, care for children in the union and protect property after death - so many of the things Americans take for granted in a marriage. Since they are denied the right of marriage they should have the dignity of civil unions.

Christian Civic League Director Michael Heath states the right to marry is implicit, but that "nobody should have legal rights that are premised on being sexually promiscuous." This places upon the state the burden of developing and enforcing rules of who may marry. By Heath's standard, the state must prove that each male and female applying for a marriage license is a virgin. Promiscuity is accepted in today's society; we may not like it, but we do not legislate and enforce laws that prevent people from engaging in sex outside marriage.
