Remember Juneteenth

Summary


As I ponder the Fourth of July and what it means to Americans, black and white, I wish that Juneteenth, a holiday important in the history of African Americans, was also required to be taught as a part of American history. It is important that both white and black Americans understand why Juneteenth is more important to black Americans than July Fourth.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday celebrated on June 19 in the United States commemorating the official end of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, for more than a century, the state of Texas was the primary home of Juneteenth celebrations. More recently, its observance has spread across the nation and even to Maine.
