Summary
Kathy Upton of Cherryfield (BDN, Sept. 4) has written an important letter about the various proposals to remove the rails and chop up the former Brewer Junction-Calais railway, now owned by state government. She rightly deplores any conversion of these commercial rights of way to recreational use and explains why. Effectively, that would foreclose the resumption of freight and passenger service, which was the purpose intended by voters for its future use.
Carving up the line into segments for excursions, foot trails and recreation vehicles would be analogous to Humpty Dumpty's great fall - the pieces could not be put together again. No, this valuable commercial-industrial asset must continue to be held in reserve until new transportation policies lead to the resumption of full rail service for Washington County.See the full content of this document
