EDDINGTON - State fisheries officials on Thursday kept anglers' hopes alive that the Penobscot River will be re-opened to salmon fishing next spring for the first time since 1999.

The Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission voted unanimously to hold a public hearing on a proposal to allow fishing for sea-run salmon on the Penobscot near Bangor. If ultimately approved by the commission, the catch-and-release Atlantic salmon season would likely be held in May.
