BANGOR - A look Tuesday night at statistics for sexually transmitted diseases in the region suggests that Bangor is living up to its reputation as a regional service center for the diagnoses and treatment of HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and acute hepatitis B.

The city's STD clinic, which is part of the Bangor Health and Community Services Department headquartered at 103 Texas Ave., provided STD services to a total of 432 people during the one-year period ending last November. The number of clients tested for HIV is not reflected in that total. While the number of clients tested for HIV was not provided, officials indicated the number of HIV- positive cases has averaged about four each year for about a decade.
