BANGOR - Winter-weary Mainers armed themselves with shovels and salt yet again Tuesday and Wednesday to battle the effects of a wild winter storm that brought rain, hail, gusty winds, freezing rain and heavy snow to the state.

"It's a complex storm system," Mark Turner, a hydrologist at the National Weather Service in Caribou, said Wednesday morning. "We had a lot of different things going on. ... We ran the [precipitation] gamut from liquid to freezing and frozen."
