In response to Jim Alciere's letter (BDN, Aug 20-21), intelligent design is a valid scientific theory right alongside evolution and the Big Bang theory and does belong in the classroom. He says intelligent design can't be proven. But in the same way, neither can it be proven that things just happened by themselves. You either believe it just happened or you believe God did it.
When something happens, science tries to find out how it happened. True science is open to exploring whether or not it was an accident of mechanistic nature or the deliberate act of an intelligent designer. True science does not have to reject the possibility of intelligent design. Besides studying simple cause and effect, science also studies probabilities. Science is open to exploring what type of cause made things happen. This gets really interesting when the factual rules of probability practically rule out the possibility of accident.See the full content of this document
