After learning that Sgt. George H. Philbrook of Kendall's Mills and the 6th Maine Regiment of the Union Army had given his life in pursuit of victory in the Civil War battle of Fredericksburg on May 3, 1863, Elisha Meservey of the 20th Maine Regiment wrote to Philbrook's widow, Ellie, a close friend.
"If any should ask me if your husband was a brave man, I should tell them that he belonged to the 6th Maine Regiment, and I know that his courage would never be doubted by anyone who knows the history of that regiment," Meservey wrote in a letter that can be read on the Web site www.philbrick-genealogy.org.See the full content of this document
