ELLSWORTH - A student at the University of Maine in Orono died Wednesday morning from injuries he suffered after apparently setting himself on fire the night before in a wooded area off Nicolin Road, according to officials.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Wednesday afternoon that Alex Whitney, 18, of Farmington, Conn., died sometime Wednesday morning at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
